What is Books Borrowing Machine?

2014, as interaction designer from Cereson, I led a project about designing books borrowing machine collaborating with Shanghai Library. This machine's purpose is to help local people to borrow and return books within small neighborhoods. 



Problem

In Shanghai, nearly one borough has one public library, which is rather lacking to support nearly 2 million people's reading needs. The real tough problem is library is limited resources, and people are less willing to take 40 mins subway to borrow books home.



Goals

In order to allow people have easier access to borrow and return books, we designed two products.

Books Borrowing Machine:offering mini library services for Shanghai library in local community, and building a better connected books reading community.

Mobile Application: connecting Shanghai Library system to check and reserve books ahead for readers.




My Role & Team

My Role: As the design lead from hardware to software, I was in charge of the industrial design of library machine, user researcher, interaction and interface designer, responsibilities ranging from observation, user interviews, to information architecture, wireframes and UI design and style guidelines.

Team: I collaborated one library manager and one project manager, two engineers from Cereson.




Challenges

Limited Design Resource: as the only designer in team, even I tried to make every design decision concise, due my limited experience, decisions are unavoidable personal preferred and somehow biased.






R E S E A R C H

Observation & Interviews

In order to understand what happened when readers checking out and returning books, I used observation method. And then talking with them about their thoughts and experience.






Personas

After the observation, I created 4 personas for typical users, which help us understand more deeply about current states and issues. These 4 personas are not able to cover all the problem we found during research.







Experience Mapping Sitemap

Then based on the understanding, the first thing I did for design is the site map. Site map helps us understand the detailed interaction between users and machine.







D E S I G N

Machine Screen Interfaces

Then based on the site maps, I designed main screens for books borrowing machine. Through touching the screens, user can either checkout books or return books by several steps.






UI Style Guideline

Previously, there is no UI style for cereson's product, I also think this is a good time to think about cereson product's User Interface system. So I made a UI style guideline for further designers and products.






Mobile App Interfaces

Also, we decided to think about a mobile app for local users to check books' availabilities ahead before checking the machine, also connecting this machine's books system with library's system.




Functions Flows

The first thing I did is to think about the functions this mobile app should have, and list them by categories. Making this as the feature list of product requirements.





App wireframes

After knowing the function list, I designed the app's wireframes for further UI design.








R E S U L T

Project Result

Unfortunately, this project was postponed because of the cooperation termination between Cereson and Shanghai Library. Even so, this project is one of my proud one as I took the responsibilities from design research to final prototype, which enhanced my understanding about how a project needs.




Takeaways

Even this project is not completed the time when I worked in Cereson, I still learned a lot from it.
- Taking designer's responsibilities to prototype ideas
- Focus on details, while the same time, solve the major issues to ensure the whole design working well.
- Communicating skills is important.
- Arrange time and plan in the right order.
